Tips for Job Applications

  1. Make sure your resume and cover letter are up to date

We are always learning, growing, and changing - which is why it’s important to regularly update your resume. When applying for jobs, you want an employer to see everything you have to offer. Make sure to include your most recent education, work/volunteer experience, certifications, and contact information!

  2. Ask someone you trust to read over your resume

Whenever you update your resume, it's always a good idea to read it over a couple of times to double check for spelling mistakes, typos, and missing information. After you’ve proofread your resume, ask someone else to check it over as well for a second opinion!

  3. Apply both in person and online

Most employers do their hiring from online applications these days. That being said, it never hurts to bring your resume to an employer in person as well. Applying in person allows you to introduce yourself face to face, which makes a lasting impression!

  4. Where to find job postings

There are many different places to find online job postings. If there is a certain place you are interested in working, try going to their website. Usually you will find a place near the bottom of the page titled “Careers” or “Join the Team”. This is where you’ll find job postings if they are available. You can also try job searching websites such as indeed.com, monster.ca, careerbeacon.com, and jobbank.gc.ca

PS: You can also go to seedns.ca and click “Entry Level Job Board” in the top right hand corner to find online job postings in HRM!

  5. Be committed and patient

The job searching process is sometimes challenging, and it can take some time to hear back from employers after submitting a job application. It’s important to stay committed and to be patient. Continue to check job boards daily so that you are always up to date on what new opportunities are available. You never know when the perfect job for you may be right around the corner!
